ONE [thepearl]

SUMMARIES:

In Chapter Five, Kino catches Juana trying to get rid of the pearl and they get in a big fight. Juana believes that the Pearl is bringing thier family bad luck. But Kino wants the pearl, no matter what. So they keep the pearl, but then they have to leave town, because people are looking for them, since Kino killed a man over the pearl. So they decided to leave town the next day.

In Chapter Six, Kino, Juana, and Coyotito venture up to the mountains to hide. As they are in hiding, Kino notices trackers following them. They now know that they must go to the mountains, if they want to save their lives. Juana is a faithfull and strong person, so she sticks with Kino the entire way. When they reach the cave, Juana and Coyotito go inside to hide. Kino knows that the hunters are outside, and tries to attack them. He grabs the gun but the hunter is too fast for him, and shoots up into the cave and Coyotito is shot. They walk back to La Paz in despair and Kino finally decides to rid of the nasty thing that ruined his life, and threw the pearl into the gulf.

QUESTION:

1. Kino won the lottery, but what was the price he had to pay for such luck? Use at least two examples from the text to support your answer.

From my point of view, Kino had to pay a big price. Not only did he lose his son, but he realizes that he could change his whole state of mind over a silly pearl! Right after Kino gets rid of the pearl the book says, “removed from human experience; that they had gone through pain and had come out on the other side; that there was almost a magical protection about them.” This shows that all of Kino’s hardwork and luck had turned to disaster and it was all for nothing . This was a big price to pay because Coyotito meant everything to Kino. Another example of the bad luck the “lottery” gave him was when earlier in the story, Kino killed the man who attacked him and he and his family had to go into hiding. Juana says, “–let us throw it back in the sea where it belongs. Kino, it is evil, it is evil.” But eventhough the pearl gave him and his family nothing but bad luck he still kept it in an attempt to make things better in his life.
