Darfur-Alex and Ben’s Presentation
After seeing Ben and Alex’s Presentation on Darfur, i learned alot more about the issue. The two highschool seniors have done alot to raise awarness and get support for Darfur’s people. They have done multiple call-ins, and sent many letters and petitions. Also they raised $7500 when they held the “Dinner for Darfur”! To prepare for this they had to get food donations, rent out a space, and hire entertainment.
They started off the powerpoint by describing what is happening now in Darfur. The Sudanese Military come into the villages in helicopters, kill men, rape women and burn the intire village. It all started in 2003 so 2008 marks the 5th year this has been going on! “Never Again” the international community said after hitlers armies fell. But what is going on? another genocide.
One of the reasons people don’t know about Darfur is that the media hardly covers it, we get more stories about celebrities than we do about world events. When you turn the news on, you expect to hear about world conflicts, but the ABC/NBC/CBS have run 20 times as many stories on justin timberlake as they have on Darfur. Some people feel as if it isnt their duty to help the darfur issue. People fear that what happened in Iraq will happen if we go to Darfur, and that it will be another invasion. We just want to bring protection to the Darfur people.
